Cysts Boils Causes and How to Treat Them

A cyst boil is also known as a pilonidal cyst. There are different names available for it. Right from the pilonidal sinus to the pilonidal abscess, it is also known as a sacrococcygeal fistula. Usually this infection contains the dual nature of a cyst and a boil. It occurs on the buttocks.

The part of the buttocks that is affected most by it is the natal cleft. Since this is also a boil, so it necessarily involves hair and skin debris. The cyst boil is most commonly known as a “pilonidal” cyst. The word “pilonidal” means a “nest of hair”. The Latin terms, ‘pilus’ for ‘hair’ and ‘nidus’ for ‘nest’ jointly coin the term.

Causes

There can be many reasons why cysts boils occur. One of the primary reasons for their cause is reputed to be ingrown hair. Also people who sit for the most part are prone to such infections. This is because excessive sitting increases the pressure on the region known as the ‘coccyx’.

Contrary to popular belief, cysts boils are not caused by trauma, however, a present cyst can be aggravated by trauma. The presence of “congenital pilonidal dimple” can also cause cysts boils according to some doctors. A pilonidal cyst might also be brought about by too much sweating.

Cysts boils was a common condition during the World War II in the United States Army where many soldiers required hospitalization due to the serious nature of these infections.

Treatment

Treatment of cysts boils generally requires the combination of three main things- depilatory creams, hot soaks and antibiotic therapy. If the case is severe, then the doctor might have to remove the cyst surgically. But only surgery is not enough.

After the surgery, the wound packing will have to be done twice every day. This has to continue for four to eight weeks. In order for complete “granulation” to take place, in a few cases, even one year might be required.

Nowadays, surgeons even take the help of tract scraping and the usage of fibrin glue to fill it. This is a much less painful method and most patients prefer this to traditional methods.

Cysts boils can be of many kinds so it is better to see a doctor right away.
